In 2008, the Supreme Court reversed a district court injunction that limited the use of sonar in anti-submarine warfare military exercises off the coast of California. The case was brought as part of a decade-long fight to protect whales. The navy’s use of sonar has been blamed for numerous deaths: necropsies of the washed up whales showed hemorrhaging in and around the ears and internal organs, most likely caused by sonar use. Joel Reynolds, senior attorney and head of NRDC’s Marine Mammal Protection Program, will give a brief history of the legal battle and continuing efforts to protect whales.
All are welcome and a non-pizza, non-seafood dinner will be served!
*Any students interested in meeting in a smaller, more informal setting to talk about environmental advocacy and public interest careers are invited to join the Environmental Protection Clinic class from 12-2 in room 110.
